Fastnet Rock colt Smart Missile was backed as well as their excellent form warranted to keep their flawless career record in tack and take out the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) in Sydney last Saturday.

Despite the race being their maiden over 1400 metres and their first ever try second-up, Smart Missile started short-priced favourite in the Luxbet markets.

After another Rose rival and their jockey, Foxwedge and James McDonald, caused a messily run Rose with early interference, Smart Missile was forced back to last by hoop Glen Boss.

It proved a disastrous decision for Smart Missile, despite producing their blistering late burst and really pulling out the run of the race over the final 600 metres, as Boss had already given the progressive Manawanui too much of a head start.

The Ron Leemon-trained Manawanui was able to lead all the way and snare an upset Golden Rose victory by a short-neck over Smart Missile, Peter Snowden’s son of Exceed And Excel Helmet crossing a further three and a quarter lengths away third.

Cummings, bookmakers around Australia and those in the racing game, however, saw just how unlucky Smart Missile was in the race and the horse lost few admirers progressing onto the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 8.

“He’s run the best sectional (600 metres), he’s run the best race but the best ride won on the day,” Cummings said after the race on Saturday.

O’Shea explained that the more suitable Melbourne aim would be the Coolmore Stud Stakes down the Flemington straight on Victoria Derby Day, October 29, where a clash with Sepoy would be on the cards, but that he would let the horse’s form dictate their programme.

“Danehill’s progeny do run so well down the straight and Caulfield can be difficult first time around for Sydney horses, so I’m looking at freshening him up after the Golden Rose and going for the straight race (the Coolmore),” O’Shea said.

“But you never rule anything out this early on.”
