2016 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Results: Divine Prophet Salutes

October 8th, 2016

Divine Prophet has defied a big drift in betting markets to win the featured 2016 Group 1 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne this afternoon.

Divine Prophet drifted from $3.10 odds to a quote of $7 by jump this afternoon, but the colt took an ideal position in transit within the Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas field as Evacuation and Revolving Door took up the running.

Settling into a good rhythm at the bend, jockey Dwayne Dunn sat in behind the race leaders rounding onto the final straight and bided his time before asking for an extra effort.

The Tony McEvoy-trained Hey Doc pulled clear with only 200m to run and it appeared to be his race to lose, but Dunn guided the son of Choisir to the fore of the field with only strides to run; bobbing at the right time to beat Seaburge on the line.

Dunn’s ride was arguably the difference in Divine Prophet being crowned the 2016 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas winner, but was quick to lay all the praise on the horse and training efforts of Team Hawkes.

“They know when to turn them on and when to turn them off, and they’ve taught me so much,” Dunn said of the Hawkes’ after winning the Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas.

“They said just be patient, let the horse come up underneath you and if he’s good enough, he’ll win. A big thrill for the team, it’s been a great effort.

“The main thing was to try and use barrier 1, but to also get him to switch off.

“He did pull with me the first quarter of the race. It wasn’t until we got to the top of the hill and I gave him a little bit of a reminder to come back underneath, and gee he relaxed beautifully from that point.

“It was just a matter of finding a passage through in the straight and he got the rest done.”

Wayne Hawkes was on hand for Divine Prophet’s impressive Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas win and was thrilled with the colt’s performance.

“He was three back on the fence, but I don’t know how many times I’ve said it – you’ve got to draw barriers,” Hawkes said.

“He drew barrier 1 and was on the fence in not a hard run race, but he just waited for the split to come and then when it did, he did the rest.

“It’s a stallion-making race and it will be another good colt to go to stud.”

Hawkes said that plans are yet to be made as to whether or not the colt will progress to the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in a fortnight.

Winx is Winx and Divine Prophet is Divine Prophet,” Hawkes said.

“She’s going to the Cox Plate and we just won a Caulfield Guineas. To be fair, this was our grand final and if we go onto the Cox Plate then so be it.

“We just put the horse first, so if he warrants being in the Cox Plate he’ll line up but if he wants to go to the paddock, he’ll be on the first float out.”
