Wazzenme Ready for 2016 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas

October 6th, 2016

Wazzenme’s 2016 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas odds have continued to firm in the days leading up to jump in Melbourne on Saturday, but the consistent colt is still set to start the race at a healthy, double-figure quote.

Wazzenme has made only seven competitive appearances at the races since making his debut in June this year, but the three-year-old has more than stamped himself as one to watch in posting one win and four minors; highlighted by several commendable performances amongst black type company.

The son of Wanted is owned by a syndicate comprised principally of first-time owners including Simon Olive, who told Racing Victoria that the group are thrilled to have a runner in the Caulfield Guineas 2016.

“We’re having great fun with it,” Olive said.

“After he ran third in the Guineas Prelude we were basically just looking at each other in stunned silence after the race, thinking ‘We’re going to have a Group 1 runner’!

“We couldn’t believe it. We were basically just laughing, going ‘This can’t be true’.”

Wazzenme opened at 2016 Caulfield Guineas odds of $26 with leading online bookmaker Ladbrokes.com.au, but the three-year-old has firmed into a quote of $21 after receiving plenty of early market attention.

Trainer Stuart Webb has been thrilled with the form and class shown by the colt already, and said that whatever he can muster in the 2016 Caulfield Guineas will be a bonus.

“Before the Prelude we sat back and said even if he runs no good here, let’s think back to what the original objective was of why we went in a horse,” he said.

“It was to have fun. Even if he’d have gone no good there, we’d already achieved that.

“But he ran out of his skin and, despite having every reason not to do well, he still hit the line well.

“Whatever will be, will be on Saturday, but we reckon we’re in this up to our eyeballs.”

Wazzenme debuted to racing for an impressive win in the Bendigo RSL 2.y.o Maiden (1100m) on June 23rd and progressed to second place finishes in each of the Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap (1200m) and Troa Supports Jockeys Trust Plate (1200m).

Making a credible transition to black type company when fifth in the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) on August 13th, the colt out of On The Loose ran third in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) and fourth in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) before placing third in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) a fortnight ago.
