October 5th, 2016

The John O’Shea-trained Stan Fox Stakes winner Impending is narrow favourite in a tight Caulfield Guineas 2016 betting market for the three-years-old feature at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday.

Set to run as Caulfield Race 8 at 4:30pm (AEDT), this season’s edition of the $1 million Group 1 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) features a final field of 14 colts and geldings.

Currently five of those sit under double-figures in the Caulfield Guineas odds at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au including Lonhro colt Impending ($4.60) who comes off a win in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) in Sydney.

That followed a brave third to stablemate Astern in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m), Impending looking to complete the Stan Fox Stakes – Caulfield Guineas double for the third time in as many years after the success of Shooting To Win (2014) and Press Statement (2015).

Hot on his heels in the latest Caulfield Guineas markets at $4.80 for the win is the rails-drawn Divine Prophet.

While Impending is the early Caulfield Guineas market mover backed in from $6 despite his wide barrier 10 draw, money for the rails-drawn Divine Prophet is easing with the Team Hawkes-trained Choisir colt drifting out from an opening quote of $3.70.

Barrier one is the most successful in Caulfield Guineas history from the past 30 years including three wins in the past 10 years, Divine Prophet out to continue the trend off three strong runs this time in.

He won the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) first-up, ran fourth in the Golden Rose and then second in the Stan Fox Stakes and is also Group 1 placed at Randwick as a two-year-old over the mile in the Champagne Stakes (1600m) from the autumn.

Rounding out the single-figure fancies are the Tony Pike-trained New Zealander Sacred Elixir ($6.50), the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained More Than Ready colt Evacuation ($7) and Stan Fox third placegetter Good Standing ($8.50).

Sacred Elixir is proven over the distance having won the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) in Brisbane on June 11 before resuming a fortnight ago with a win in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m).

He is now after the Prelude – Guineas double last completed by Helmet (2011).

The last Caulfield Guineas winner to salute at double-figures was All Too Hard ($11 in 2012), and this season the best of the longer priced hopefuls include: last Friday night’s Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) winner at The Valley Hey Doc ($11), Group 2 winning Kiwi Saracino ($12) and Guineas Prelude fourth-placegetter Seaburge ($19).
