Sacred Elixir Primed for 2016 Caulfield Guineas

September 27th, 2016

Trainer Tony Pike is confident that talented three-year-old Sacred Elixir has only taken benefit from his first-up run for success in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude over the weekend, as focus shifts to the 2016 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in a fortnight.

Sacred Elixir stamped himself as a colt to follow through a Brisbane Winter Carnival campaign this year, which resulted in a dominant and maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) on June 11th.

Pike told Racing Ahead that he hadn’t expected the Pour Moi gelding to win the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) first-up, but is confident that the horse will only carry improvement into the Caulfield Guineas 2016 on October 8th.

“He’s great, he ate up over the weekend and had a light trot and canter this morning and seems very well, so that’s encouraging,” Pike said.

“Onwards to the Guineas now in two weeks.

“First time around Caulfield I thought there might have been one of two just a bit sharp for him, I thought he’d hit the line strongly but might just come up a little bit short first-up over 1400m.

“It’s the first time he’s drawn a barrier for a fair while. He’s always drawing wide and we’ve had no option bar go back.

“I just said to Damien (Lane) to give him a little push out of the gates and just see if he can land a little bit closer without getting him out of his comfort zone, and he jumped well and travelled nicely.

“He hadn’t raced since the JJ Atkins to fitness-wise it was good and his coat still has a little bit to come on as well.

“Once he gets up over a mile and to 2000m it will be even better.”

Trialling well in the lead-up to his competitive debut, Sacred Elixir ran second in the Timeout Maiden (1200m) at Ellerslie in his homeland on December 28th; progressing to success in the Countdown To Karaka Millions Plate (1200m) before ending his campaign sixth in the Listed Karaka Millions (1200m).

Debuting in Australia for success in the Bundaberg Rum Handicap (1400m), Sacred Elixir ran sixth in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) in his only other start prior to the JJ Atkins.

Sacred Elixir is currently available at 2016 Caulfield Guineas odds of $6.50 with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
