New Zealand Trainer Tony Pike has confirmed the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) will figure as a major target for rising three-year-old Sacred Elixir during the forthcoming Spring Carnival.

Sacred Elixir has been a standout for the Cambridge-based Pike through a short but exciting racing career so far, and announced himself to the Australian racing community through a three start winter preparation that peaked with a win in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) on June 11th.

Having taken plenty of benefit in his time away from racing, Pike revealed that the colt will be set on a path towards the 2016 Caulfield Guineas before progressing to an appearance in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m).

“At this stage he’ll kick off in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude, and head to the Caulfield Guineas,” Pike told Racing Victoria.

“Obviously how he performs in those two will decide what we do after that.

“His pedigree suggests he should get the Derby distance quite easily.

“He’s ran at a mile as a two-year-old, so we thought we’d run in the Caulfield Guineas in case he doesn’t stay for one reason or not.

“Obviously he’s got a bit of brilliance.

“We’ll attack the Caulfield Guineas first, then obviously the Victoria Derby looks a nice target at the end of the carnival.”

Trialling well in the lead-up to his competitive debut, Sacred Elixir charged home to finish second in the Timeout Maiden (1200m) on December 28th before posting his first career win in the Countdown To Karaka Millions Plate (1200m) on January 9th.

Returning to the paddock after placing sixth in the Listed Karaka Millions (1200m), the Pour Moi gelding debuted in Australia for success in the Bundaberg Rum Handicap (1400m) on the Sunshine Coast on May 11th; progressing to a credible sixth in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) in his only other start prior to the JJ Atkins.
