Dal Cielo to Settle Off Pace in 2015 Caulfield Guineas

October 7th, 2015

Trainer Murray Baker is confident kiwi raider Dal Cielo is up to the class of Saturday’s featured Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), but believes the key to success for the talented three-year-olds lies with taking a position off pace in transit.

Dal Cielo was allowed to stride forward and immediately took a position at the fore of the field in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) a fortnight ago but was unable to match the late pace of eventual winner Bon Aurum following a tough run and finished third.

Pleased with the condition the Per Incanto colt has taken from his Australian racing debut, Baker told Racing Ahead he will instruct jockey Opie Bosson to drop back from barrier 8 in the 2015 Caulfield Guineas before mounting an assault in the final straight.

“He bounced through it,” Baker said of Dal Cielo’s run in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude.

“He has rather surprised us since he got over here, I think he wants to be an Aussie.

“We are happy with where he is.

“It is a strong test on Saturday and we will see if he is up to it.

“I would hope that he wouldn’t be in front.

“Last start was first time with blinkers and he jumped and ran a bit, but I hope he will settle off the pace a bit.

“It is a very strong field and I just hope that he can run a good race.”

Dal Cielo has finished outside the first three only once in six career starts so far, and immediately impressive upon debut for second in a strong Riccarton sprint over 800m in October last year.

Returning on Boxing Day for a maiden race win in the DHL 2.y.o Stakes (1100m), Dal Cielo continued to impress in placing third in the Listed Karaka Millions (1200m) before mustering a huge performance for success in the Group 1 Diamond Stakes (1200m) on March 7th.

Returning this time for fourth in the Listed Northland Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Ruakaka a fortnight prior to his maiden Australian performance, Dal Cielo is currently available at generous Caulfield Guineas odds of $9 for success with Ladbrokes.com.au.
