Odyssey Moon Continues to Battle Towards 2015 Caulfield Guineas

September 8th, 2015

Trainer Rod Northam is confident Group 1 performer Odyssey Moon is a legitimate 2015 Caulfield Guineas contenders, and has revealed the three-year-old will likely contest the Listed Pin & Win Stakes (1400m) at Flemington this Saturday, rather than the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m).

Odyssey Moon has posted one win and four minors through his eight competitive starts so far, and returned this time for a credible performance for third in the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on August 22nd.

Confident the son of Snitzel will react favourably to a step-up to 1400m early in his 2015 Caulfield Guineas campaign, Northam told AAP he also believes the conditions at Flemington will suit his runner this weekend.

“I’m 95 per cent sure he’ll run in the Listed race,” Northam said.

“It’s pretty hard for horses to finish races off like that when they sit three-deep at Moonee Valley.

“Damien Oliver was a big rap for his run and he has ridden him for me since and he’s happy that he has come on nicely.

“We’re going into Saturday feeling pretty confident.”

Northam revealed Odyssey Moon will contest the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) following Saturday’s race as his final point of call ahead of the 2015 Caulfield Guineas.

“Then we’ll be well and truly sure he’ll be rock-hard fit for that race,” Northam said.

“If he stays sound and can hold his form, you’d have to think he’s got to be in the mix for sure.”

Debuting for success in the Inglis Nursery (1000m) on December 13th, Odyssey Moon progressed to fourth in a Rosehill minor over 1200m before returning this year for second in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) and third in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m).

Running on for a credible eighth in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), the colt out of Run To The Moon undoubtedly produced a career-best effort to date when second to Pride Of Dubai in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on Day 1 of The Championships; returning to the paddock after placing sixth in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m).
