55 Confirmed in 2014 Caulfield Guineas Second Acceptances

September 23rd, 2014

A classy list of 55 three-year-olds have been confirmed in second acceptances for the 2014 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), highlighted by some of the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival’s most exciting up-and-coming prospects.

A standout performer over the mile in his short racing career so-far, classy Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding Almalad has been confirmed in Caulfield Guineas second acceptances.

Securing three impressive race wins from his five competitive starts so far, Almalad immediately stamped his claims as one to watch upon debuting to racing in late December, winning the Nuturf Plate (1000m) with relative ease.

Electing to bypass the 2014 Autumn Carnival with the son of Al Maher, Waterhouse’s decision immediately paid dividends when up-and-coming jockey Winona Costin steered Almalad to a near-four length victory in the TAB Early Quaddie Plate (1200m) first-up on May 24th before in-form hoop Tommy Berry took the reins for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) on June 7th.

Unable to figure when beating a single runner home in the Group 3 Run To The Rose (1200m) first-up on August 30th, Almalad finished a credible fourth in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) last time out on September 13th, appearing to relish the top-flight competition.

Confirmed to contest the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley this Friday, Waterhouse is confident Almalad’s proven form over the distance will count for a lot on October 11th.

Also confirmed in second acceptances for the 2014 Caulfield Guineas is stable star for trainer Paul Messara, Scissor Kick.

Finishing outside the places just once in five competitive starts so far, Scissor Kick has returned to the track in stunning form this time in and appears primed for a step-up in distance for the 2014 Caulfield Guineas.

Charging home to win the More Than Ready 2.y.o (1250m) by three lengths first-up on July 23rd, the Redoute’s Choice colt secured a maiden black type win when comfortably taking out the Rosebud; repeating the dose just two weeks later in the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m).

Given only slight hope of success in the Golden Rose last time out, the Scissor Kick displayed an exceptional turn of foot in the final straight to finish only a short nose behind winner Hallowed Crown; stamping his claims as a leading Guineas contender.

Messara is poised to be offered two good chances of success in the 2014 Caulfield Guineas, having also confirmed Panzer Division in second acceptances.

Winning his debut race by close to four lengths on July 19th, Panzer Division finished second to his stable mate in the Up And Coming Stakes before returning to the winner’s circle in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) on September 6th.

Finishing a credible fifth amongst open company in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) last weekend, Messara is yet to decide whether the Guineas or Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) will figure as Panzer Division’s major target, but is keeping his options open.

A very exciting prospect for the leading Queensland trainer, Tony Gollan has confirmed Looks Like The Cat in second acceptances for the 2014 Caulfield Guineas.

A standout performer over the Brisbane Winter Carnival, Looks Like The Cat finished second in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) first-up before securing back-to-back third placings in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) and J.J. Atkins.

Displaying his class when second to leading Caulfield Guineas hopeful Rich Enuff in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) first-up, the Husson gelding has also been included in nominations for the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) in late October.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best early odds on the 2014 Caulfield Guineas, for which second acceptor Chivalry leads markets at a quote of $4.60, from Rich Enuff ($8) and Zebulon ($8).
