2014 Caulfield Guineas May Figure for Illustrious Lad

July 31st, 2014

While unable to make a reasonable impact when eleventh in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1100m) most recently on February 1st, trainer Peter Gelagotis has revealed he is eyeing a possible spring campaign geared towards the featured Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) for rising three-year-old Illustrious Lad.

Debuting with an exceptional victory in the Boxing Day Family Races Plate (1000m) on December 21st, Illustrious Lad looked completely out of sorts when finishing at the rear of the field in the Chairman’s Stakes, suggesting the two-year-old as an ideal candidate for gelding.

“On the day out the back in the stalls, he got very colty where he showed no signs of that in Adelaide; he was very relaxed and very composed,” Gelagotis told Racing Ahead.

“He lost his way at his second start and unfortunately he ran his way before he got out to the start.

“We were mindful of that when he came back in and we gelded him straight away.

“He will hopefully present like a true racehorse should.”

While yet to trial the son of I Am Invincible over the longer distance, Gelagotis is convinced Illustrious Lad will perform to a much higher standard when stepped up to a mile, underlining the Caulfield Guineas as an ideal target through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.

“He has done about 12 weeks of work, so he has had a nice steady preparation and we just brought him along quietly,” Gelagotis added.

“Whatever he does he is going to improve three-fold and I think that he might get a bit of a trip the horse.

“He will step out to 1400 at some stage in his campaign.

“I have a gut feeling that he may get a little bit further.

“Hopefully he takes the next step and he can be a spring contender.”

With Illustrious Lad yet to be confirmed for a tilt at the 2014 Caulfield Guineas, early betting markets for the October 11th feature currently display Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) champion Almalad as outright $9 favourite for success, ahead of Chivalry, Looks Like The Cat and Meursault; currently sharing the second line at a quote of $11 with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
