Looks Like The Cat to Target 2014 Caulfield Guineas

July 23rd, 2014

Stamping his claims as one to watch over major two-year-old events through the 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, in-form Queensland trainer Tony Gollan has revealed the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 11th will likely figure as the major target for rising three-year-old Looks Like The Cat through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.

Quickly building to the task over just four competitive starts so far, Looks Like The Cat displayed a keen turn of foot to finish third in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 7th making up good ground on champion Almalad and runner-up Brazen Beau over the final 200m.

Just one week from being awarded a maiden metropolitan trainers’ title following what has already been a standout season, Gollan told Racing Ahead the Husson colt will resume in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on September 13th, allowing sufficient time to find peak condition for the Caulfield Guineas.

“I think we saw him at his best when he got out to the mile on the bigger track (in Brisbane) and that’ll be the same in Melbourne,” Gollan said

“I think we’ll see him at his best Guineas Day and also when he backs up in the 2000-metre race the week after.

“We’re going to try some blinkers on him in trackwork this time in, maybe even do that in the jump-out before we head down.”

Yet to finish outside the places over his four starts, Looks Like The Cat more than laid his claims as one to watch over winter with a near-two length victory in the XXXX Gold 2.y.o Handicap (1200m) on debut in February; briefly returning to the paddock before returning for second in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) on May 10th.

Running on for third in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) in his only other starts prior to the J.J. Atkins, Looks Like The Cat is currently offered at generous odds of $11 for success in early betting markets for the 2014 Caulfield Guineas; sharing the second line of betting with likely rivals Chivalry and Meursault at leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
