Moroney Eyeing 2014 Caulfield Guineas for Merion

July 11th, 2014

Trainer Mike Moroney is confident rising three-year-old Merion will figure as a legitimate 2014 Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) contender come October 11th after impressing over his two debut race starts so far.

While yet to line up against the majority of likely opponents for the 2014 Caulfield Guineas, Moroney said he believes Merion has displayed the ideal form-line for the major race and confirmed he will also enter the three-year-old for the major Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 25th.

“He’s won his only two, he won that Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1410m) and he won the same two races that the horse that won the Caulfield Guineas last year did (Long John),” Moroney told RVN.

“He’s back been in work for a little while, he’s our main three year-old, and he’s on a Guineas campaign.

“He’ll also be nominated for the Cox Plate, he’ll definitely be nominated.”

Returning to the spelling paddock after strolling home to win the Anzac Day Stakes last time out, Moroney said Merion has grown to ideal size and will be geared towards a hit-out in August before a likely return competitively at Moonee Valley.

“We put him in the paddock briefly just gave him four weeks in the paddock more or less,” Moroney added.

“He grew, put on nice weight, grew a little bit he’s a lovely horses, I‘d say he’s put on 25kgs while he was out and he’s continued to do well inside the stable.

“He’s been in work about six weeks more or less and about three-weeks from a jump-out.

“I might kick off at Moonee Valley in a stakes race there; I’d like to give him a bit of a look at the Valley too.

“It just looks a nice start for him it will either be there or the 1400m the week after at Flemington, it will be one of the two anyway.”

Yet to appear in early betting markets for the 2014 Caulfield Guineas, Merion is sure to cause noticeable ripples if successful upon his competitive return in August.
