Meursault to Target 2014 Caulfield Guineas

Racing Manager for Darley Australia, Jason Walsh has revealed exciting two-year-old Meursault will target the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.

Contesting four barrier trials prior to his only appearance on course to date; a resounding three length victory in the Evergreen Turf Claret Stakes (1300m) on May 3rd, Walsh said the Medaglia D’Oro colt was initially aimed towards the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, but remained in Sydney to continue development in training.

“He had quite a few trials and he was very raw and learning,” Walsh told Racing Ahead.

“We had intentions to take him to Brisbane for the J.J. Atkins, but the way that he won at Hawkesbury, we thought that he had so much improvement left in him and to win as decisively as he did suggests that he may be that top-notch horse, so we elected to bypass Brisbane and aim him at the Caulfield Guineas.

“He still has a bit to learn on the way there, but there is no doubt that he has a lot of raw talent.”

Set to contest a reasonably historic path towards the 2014 Caulfield Guineas, Meursault is likely to return to the track for the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) at Royal Randwick on August 23rd before a possible tilt at the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens, ahead of a trip to Melbourne for the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) two weeks prior to his major target.

While yet to face off with any of his leading Caulfield Guineas rivals competitively, Meursault is currently offered as equal second-favourite for success in early betting markets at a generous quote of $11.

Breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins last time out, Gai Waterhouse-trained Almalad is currently sole occupant of the top line of early betting for Caulfield Guineas success at $9 odds.
