2013 Caulfield Guineas Results – Long John Digs Deep To Hold-Off Divine Calling

October 12th, 2013

Exciting gelding Long John held-off Gai Waterhouse-trained Divine Calling and the unlucky Shamus Award to win the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield this afternoon.

Long John was ridden just off the pace by Kerrin McEvoy and got off the fence with 350 metres left to run to hit the front and race clear in the final straight.

Divine Calling loomed as the danger and looked the winner with 100 metres left to run but Long John managed to deep dig and fight him off, while Shamus Award flashed home from the back of the field to finish third.

Peter Snowden won the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) with Complacent at Royal Randwick earlier in the day and was once again quick to pay credit to a gun ride.

“It is a great day and it is very satisfying,” Snowden said after the race.

“He was given a gun ride, it was a perfect ride, everywhere we wanted to be in our pre-race maps he was there.

“He had to rally and dip deep but that is one of the things Stevie Arnold always said about him; when he is challenged he does seem to be able to kick lifting and he did that today.”

Long John has been included in the third acceptances for the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) and Snowden indicated that a start in the Australasian Weight-For-Age Championship was not out of the question for the three-year-old but said he is also looking towards the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m).

“As to what we do with him over the three weeks we will have to have a good think about, see how the horse pulls up and talk to the team,” Snowden said.

“We always think that you can (run in the Cox Plate with a three-year-old) and I have seen it done but it is a big ask.

“I thought Helmet was a horse that could do it but it brought him undone so I will have to think long and hard about it.

“The Derby is a possibility; I really think a horse like this if he ran at Moonee Valley and came back to Flemington for the Derby would be the perfect preparation.”

Darley Melbourne stable foreman Paul Snowden has done the majority of the work with Long John in the lead-up to the Caulfield Guineas, with Peter Snowden admitting that he has only seen the gelding work twice, and there is no question in the younger Snowden’s mind about where the three-year-old should have his next race start.

“I would for sure,” Snowden said when asked if he would run Long John in the Cox Plate.

“I was very confident that we had the best horse in the race and Kieran rode him great.”

Darley stable jockey Kerrin McEvoy has been criticised for a number of his rides throughout the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival but produced a gem of a ride on Long John when it mattered most.

McEvoy raced away with the Caulfield jockey challenge but said he was more satisfied to win the $1 million race for the second time in his career, after winning with Helmet in 2011.

“It is an honor to win the race again and it is a real dream to win in these colours again,” McEvoy said after the race.

“It is a big team, as everybody knows, and these are the races that everybody wants to win.”

The Caulfield Guineas may be in the books for another year but there are still plenty of major races left in the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival.

Leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au offered Double The Odds on all Caulfield Guineas runners, with Long John available at up to $9, and this offer will run on the Caulfield Cup (2400m), Cox Plate (2040m), Victoria Derby (2500m) and Melbourne Cup (3200m).
