October 13th, 2012

Gai Waterhouse’s raging favourite Pierro tasted defeat for the first time in the 2012 Caulfield Guineas on Saturday October 13, the former Cox Plate favourite going down in the million dollar feature to upset winner All Too Hard.

Having won all eight of their previous starts including the autumn 2YO triple crown, Pierro jumped the red hot $1.22 favourite in the $1 million Group 1 BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m) but became the latest in a line of young champs to lose the Guineas in their first run at the track.

They had the flying form with eight previous wins including three Group 1 victories but Pierro failed to produce the goods in the Guineas having a horror start and, despite having the lead in the straight, they were run down by another very good colt in the Patinack Farm-owned All Too Hard.

A million purchase as a yearling Casino Prince colt All Too Hard has been in the headlines since their debut being a half-brother to the world’s best mare Black Caviar.

Disappointing in their three previous runs as a three-year-old this time in, All Too Hard showed great progression in the Caulfield Guineas maintaining their unbeaten record in Melbourne.

After beginning their run on the straight All Too Hard and jockey Dwayne Dunn moved up to the favourite Pierro to run them down and score a smart half-length victory.

Golden Rose winner Epaulette from the stables of Peter Snowden was a further length and a three quarters away for third finishing off the winning Caulfield Guineas trifecta.

Dunn was pleased with All Too Hard’s run today saying the Caulfield Guineas 2012 was always their main aim this spring.

“This was always the grand final, this was his main king pin race, so where they go from here we don’t know,” he said.

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes meanwhile was happy to be asked about ambitions for the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 27.

“Are we going there are we?” he said of the Cox Plate.

“Sounds alright to me!”
