2011 Caulfield Guineas results – Helmet wins

Helmet had every excuse to lose the 2011 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on the weekend but came away as the winner of a third Group 1 event and a star next to his name.

His jockey Kerrin McEvoy, in a surprise move, took on natural front runner Glynn Schofield on Manawanui who didn’t give away the lead cheaply.

The race was set up for a swooper but none arrived.

Instead the two front runners staged a memorable dual in the $1m feature .

Helmet drew clear at the 300m after setting a fast pace, but Manawanui was having none of it.

Schofield got Manawanui to rally and he challenged close to the line.

Helmet looked in danger but on the post lifted the bar higher and got  the result by a head.

Bookmakers where suitably impressed and immediately installed Helmet as the new 2011 Group 1 W S Cox Plate (2040m) favourite.

He displaced Kiwi star Jimmy Choux who is now $4.50 with Luxbet.

The Robert Hickmott trained Collar, who runs in Wednesday’s  Catanach’s Jewellers Ladies Day Plate (1600m) at Caulfield, has been posted as the $7 favourite by Luxbet.
